FAQ

Can lithium batteries replace lead-acid batteries on boats?

Yes, lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries are an ideal alternative:

(1) Lighter (reduces the boat's weight)

(2) Higher cycle life (over 4000 cycles)

(3) Stable performance, supports high current discharge

(4) Safer, low-maintenance
Power Queen lithium batteries combine a compatible charger, BMS system, and protective features, making them the ideal replacement for lead-acid batteries. Power Queen LiFePO4 batteries feature a robust design and durable ABS casing, making them perfectly suited for marine use. They withstand the shocks, movement, and waves typical of boating. For added protection, we recommend storing the battery securely in a dry, well-ventilated area.

What safety precautions are there when using batteries on boats?

Install the battery in a well-ventilated, dry and secure location.

Use waterproof, shockproof and flame-retardant cables for the connection.

Install fuses or circuit breakers to prevent short circuits and fires.

Use batteries with BMS protection to avoid overcharging, deep discharging, and short circuits.

Check the battery charge level before each journey to avoid power loss during the journey.

How do you charge marine batteries? Can solar energy be used?

Common charging methods for marine batteries are:

Shore power: Charging with an external AC power source in port

Ship solar system: Charging with solar panels and MPPT controller, environmentally friendly and quiet, suitable for long voyages

Charging with a generator or onboard engine (using a DC/DC charger)

Note: To avoid damage to the battery and a shortened lifespan, a special charger that is suitable for the battery type (e.g. LiFePO4) must be used.

What battery capacity do I need to power my boat?

It depends on the power consumption of the devices and the duration of use. Examples:

Sailing engine, fish finder, navigation light, refrigerator, etc.

Calculation method: Total electricity consumption per day (Wh) ÷ Battery voltage = required ampere-hours (Ah)
Example: With a total power consumption of 1200 Wh and a 12 V system, approximately 100 Ah of capacity is required (1200 ÷ 12 = 100 Ah). It is recommended to allow for 20% more capacity to account for losses.

What is the difference between a marine battery and a regular car battery?

Marine batteries are typically deep-cycle batteries designed for long-term, stable power supply, not for short-term, high-current starting operations. In contrast, starter batteries are primarily used for ignition.

Marine batteries must also be waterproof, shockproof, and corrosion-resistant. Power Queen Marine lithium batteries offer low-temperature charging protection and a seawater-resistant casing design. Note that they cannot be used as starter batteries.
